An IRC or AIM chatroom can be great for coordinating events and just plain adding to the game's fun.
AOL Instant Messenger's chats are fairly stable and easy to use, but provide no op controls by default, and there's no good client for them on the iPhone or Android platforms.
IRC chatrooms are more stable, and Mibbit makes providing an in-browser chat link trivially easy for those who do not want to use a dedicated client for one reason or anothe. Plus, no registration required except for ops!
I recommend gamesurge.net as a good place to host an IRC chat, personally.

Well, if you click the upgrade this forum part of the site, one of the options is to add a chatroom. The only problem is that it's thirty bucks, but the upside is that it's a one time fee. Something to keep in mind, I suppose.

I'll front some or all of the money if needed, if it's a good room.

I feel the same way. Heck, I'd be tempted to buy it myself. I'm not sure if we could all put a portion forth or not though. Otherwise it'd just be five bucks a pop for each of us. I don't know enough about Paypal to tell you guys if we can do that.

It is at best unlikely that the chat room function would be superior to what we can get for free from an IRC service, to be honest. In particular, HTML chats almost never provide for scripting support - which would allow for things like a channel dicebot to expedite play.
